One of the dreams of people entering the U.S. with a tourist or visitor’s visa is if they could be granted a green card, and here, we have we are to discuss how to change from a tourist visa to a marriage green card.

Questions have been coming in from visitors from different parts of the world asking how possible it is to get married in the U.S. while having a visitor’s visa.

This is possible if you meet all the needed requirements, and then it is important to understand how it is done.  There are two different means immigrants on visitors’ visas can marry a U.S. citizen or a green cardholder.

Path 1: If You Are Married To A U.S. Citizen

The USA green card can be obtained through marriage to a U.S. citizen. This is considered one of the safest means to change from a visitor’s visa to a green card. To be able to achieve this, you and your spouse are advised to do the following together not separately;

  1. Fill the family sponsor form or otherwise called the “petition for Alien Relative”. This is to be completed and as well signed by your spouse who is a U.S. citizen.
  2. The green card application form is also known as “Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjustment of Status”. This is to be completed and signed by you.

Path 2: If You Are Married To A Green Card Holder

Apart from getting married to a U.S. citizen, you can as well get married to a green card holder to be able to gain your own green card. A green card holder is someone who has stayed in the U.S. for a longer period of time, who is law-abiding or someone who has gotten married to a U.S. citizen.

To be able to get your green card through marriage with a green card holder, you and your spouse need to do the following;

  1. Fill the family sponsor form or otherwise called the “petition for Alien Relative”. This is to be completed and as well signed by your spouse who is a U.S. citizen.
  2. When the family sponsor form is approved, you will be able to apply for a marriage-based green card. And the next step depends on if your application was successful.
